Walter P. Christian
May Institute
Dr. Walter P. Christian, ABPP, is president and chief executive officer of the May Institute. Since he began his leadership in 1978, the May Institute has grown from one school for autistic children to a comprehensive network of more than 180 service locations in 17 states. During that time, the institute has earned an international reputation for providing outstanding behavioral healthcare, education, and rehabilitation to individuals with special needs.
Dr. Christian is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association of Mental Health Administrators, and the American Academy of Behavioral Psychology. He holds faculty appointments at Boston University School of Medicine, the University of Kansas, and Northeastern University. He has also held appointments at Harvard Medical School, McLean Hospital, and at the Developmental Evaluation Center at Children's Hospital in Boston, and has been an adjunct faculty member at Southern Illinois University for a number of years. He has served as an expert consultant to the Special Litigation Section, Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. The author of eight books and more than 60 articles and chapters on human service management, organizational development, client rights, and service programming, Dr. Christian has served on many editorial boards. His books include Preservation of Client Rights (1981), Effective Management in Human Services (1983), Programming Effective Human Services (1984), and Behavior Analysis and Therapy in Residential Programs (1986).
